Why Not Use My Real Name?

This post made me realize something quite funny. It is very important for me that you know that everything here is written by real human. I use this blog as a outlet for me to put my thoughs into text. I don't try to write posts that will garner readers or follow trends. I just whatever I want to explore or write about.

However, among all this talk of me being a human, I am still anonymous. Why?

There are a couple of reasons. First of all, if I were to use my real identity, I could not reverse that. What is on the internet stays there. If this blog was only me writing articles about tech or whatever, I guess that wouldn't hurt. However, that isnt what I want to write about. I want to explore my thoughts and ideas, and I don't want to put time and effort into self-censoring incase any future employer would find this blog.

And speaking of self-censoring, being anonymous makes it easier for me to write, it allows me to let go of my impostor syndrome a bit. If I write something cringe or whatever, it will only live on as a forgotten post on some random blog among thousands, rather than something that could be found by looking up my real name.

Also, it isn't the 90's anymore, bad guys will use any information you release on the net. People release way too much information about their private life today. Personally, I recommend to use multiple "online identities" as basic and effective security hygiene. Sounds dramatic, but in practice it just means creating a new username for new services which arent connected to previous services.

As an wild example, let's say that you start a blog. That is a great oppurtunity to create a new online identity. Not that I regret choosing this name or anything. Luckily, searching for "hakkerman" mostly gives results about the meme, and apperantly some furry artist (not me, believe me if you want).

Not that I'm saying you should not use your real name on the net or that it is dangerous in of itself. However, you should be aware that anything you then share can be linked to your identity and can be seen by future employers and spear phishers.

So for know, you'll have to live with only knowing that I'm some guy or gal (take a wild fuckin' guess which), living somewhere on planet earth, living the first century of my life.
